GAINESVILLE - Hall County school officials are rethinking preliminary plans to cancel February 21 as a teacher furlough day and use it as a regular school day.

They said earlier this week they planned to remove February 21 as a teacher furlough day because of some unexpected new federal money. Now, after a survey of teachers, Superintendent Will Schofield says its obvious they would rather have school on Friday February 18th - which was also supposed to be a day off - rather than Monday the 21.

"I just naively assumed," Schofield said Thursday morning, "people would prefer to have off Friday, Saturday, Sunday over Saturday, Sunday, Monday but missed the fact that Monday was President's Day and many of our parents and community members would be off that day."

So, Schofield says he'll recommend just that to the school board next month... school on February 18th but not on February 21.
