The Georgia News Network says a Paulding County Sheriff's Department report says Richardson put a gun to his head August 5 following a domestic dispute in Atlanta.
Paulding authorities responded to a call at Richardson's Hiram home, where a man told them he took the gun from Richardson, who had earlier told an Atlanta officer he was going home to "end his problems and kill himself."
Last November, Richardson threatened suicide shortly before he resigned the speakership in disgrace over an affair with a lobbyist.
