GAINESVILLE - The Red Rabbit fixed route bus service will begin Phase 2 of a 5-year expansion plan today.

Gainesville-Hall County Community Service Center Director, Phillippa Lewis Moss, said Red Rabbit passengers will notice three improvements designed to enhance the public transportation experience.

"The biggest unveiling will be the new Route 7 in Oakwood. This route will feature stops at Gainesville State College, Lanier Technical College, Wal-Mart, Goodwill, Blackshear Place Library, and the Park & Ride Lot at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Thurman Tanner Parkway," Lewis Moss said.

Gainesville State College President, Dr. Martha Nesbitt, said the timing could not be better.

"Our campuses are growing so fast, we are nearly bursting at the seams," Dr. Nesbitt said. Interim President of Lanier Technical College, Russell Vandiver, echoed President Nesbitt's remarks. "Parking is at a premium. We need the help of public transportation and the convenience it provides," Vandiver said.

More changes will come on September 1 when Route 2 will be reconfigured to give passengers better access to Brenau University and shopping venues such as the Gainesville Square, Colonial Lakeshore Mall, Kohl's, Home Depot, Best Buy, Pet Smart, and Hollywood Cinemas.

Brenau University President, Dr. Ed Schrader, said downtown transportation improvements always benefit Brenau. "We have a large student population that lives on campus, but does not own cars. They are very eager to have enhanced opportunities to get around town," said Schrader.

The third route change will take place Monday, September 13, when Route 5 goes from a 60-minute service to a 30-minute service. This most popular Red Rabbit route hits dozens of businesses, government and community organizations along Jesse Jewell Parkway from Memorial Park to Main Street.
