ATLANTA - Thousands of children across Georgia are heading back to school this week.

Many of the largest of the state's school districts start classes Monday. The districts include: Gwinnett County, DeKalb County, Atlanta schools, Forsyth County, Richmond County and Muscogee County.

And, Monday is the biggest back-to-school day in our area.

In addition to Forsyth and Gwinnett, classes are also resuming in several other systems in the immediate Gainesville area: Hall, Dawson, and Banks counties and Commerce City and Gainesville City. A number of private schools in the area are opening Monday, as well, including Maranatha Christian Academy and North Georgia Christian School.

Cobb County schools - the state's second largest district - have been in session a week.

But schools officials are being cautious during outdoor activities as temperatures remain in the 90s.

Recess and sports practices are held indoors or canceled because of the weather. Student are allowed to bring water on buses without air conditioning, and many classrooms are stocked with extra fans to supplement cooling systems.
