UNDATED - The Federal Highway Administration has approved a study in hopes of determining how much it will cost to build an interstate highway through the Northeast Georgia mountains.

A number of groups oppose the highway plan.

"We think that it's going to definitively show that this road is unnecessary and overly destructive," said Jim Grode, president of Ways South. "It doesn't need to be built."

Grode said the proposed Interstate 3 would cause major consequences to quality of life and the environment in Northeast Georgia.

The highway could eventually run from Savannah to Tennessee if it's built.
