Cronic, Smith, Syfans honored by GSA

LAKE LANIER ISLANDS - Hall County Sheriff Steve Cronic was awarded the 2010 Georgia Sheriffs' Association's President's Award by the Georgia Sheriffs' Association (GSA). <br /> <br /> The award recognizes Sheriff Cronic's commitment to fund-raising for the association's Youth Homes through annual golf tournaments and motorcycle rides, as well as his dedicated service to the Georgia Sheriffs' Association. McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshal presented the award to Sheriff Cronic last week at Lake Lanier Islands during the GSA's Annual Conference. <br /> <br /> Local businessman Jim Syfan accepted the 2010 Georgia Sheriffs' Association Meritorious Service Award on behalf of his son, Steve Syfan, for their family's contributions to the Hall County Sheriff's Office. <br /> <br /> The Syfans have provided funds to place drug detection dogs in several Hall County High Schools, Tasers for courthouse security, and funded the Sheriff's Office Honor Guards trip to Washington, D.C., to honor Deputy Tim White, who died in the line of service.<br /> <br /> Deputy Ana Smith was awarded the 2010 Georgia Sheriffs' Association Deputy of the Year Award of Valor. Smith earned this prestigious award for her actions by entering a burning mobile home to save a mother of two who had gone back into the structure to retrieve household items and did not return. Smith entered the smoke filled home and rescued the woman who was later released from the hospital after being treated for smoke inhalation. <br /> <br /> Smith, who works in the Sheriff's Office Domestic Violence Unit, has been with the Hall County Sheriff's Office for seven years. She is the third Hall County Sheriff's Deputy to receive the statewide honor.<br />
