GAINESVILLE - Bear sightings were reported in north Gainesville Friday for the second straight day.

Kevin Lowrey, a Department of Natural Resource wildlife biologist, said Friday that while he's trying to catch the bear, which began showing up around town on Thursday, he needs the right opportunity.

Lowrey thought he had an opportunity Friday morning when the bear stayed at one resident's bird feeder for an extended period. But when Lowrey arrived, the bear was moving again.

The bear was first spotted early Thursday on the front lawn of First Baptist Church on Green Street and was later spotted, about noon, moving into a kudzu-covered ravine in an area behind the church along Forrest Avenue. (See separate story.)

Gainesville resident Janice Ludwig says the 100-pound male bear showed up on her deck on Thursday and was chased by her two small dogs.

Lowrey says the bear is not aggressive and the best thing would be for it to find its own way out of town.
