GAINESVILLE - Gainesville police said Wednesday that contrary to earlier reports there were no shots fired during a robbery/assault early Tuesday at Spring Valley Apartments.

Gainesville police spokesman Shawn Welsh said Tuesday the two victims were in a breezeway at Spring Valley Apartments on Thompson Bridge Road just after midnight when they were approached by two men who asked for and received change.

Sgt. Welsh says one of the victims thought that the bill they had received in the exchange seemed to be counterfeit and the pair demanded their money back. He says that's when a fight broke out, during which one of the suspects pulled a gun. At that point one of the victims ran into a nearby apartment and other was pistol-whipped.

Due to a reporter's error, it was reported that a shot was fired between the time the gun was produced and the pistol-whipping occurred. Lt. Carol Martin of the Gainesville Police Department and Sgt. Welsh said Wednesday no shots were fired during the incident. AccessNorthGa.com regrets the error.

Sgt. Welsh says the victims were treated at the scene but were later taken to the hospital by family members or friends to be checked out.

Both suspects were described as black, 5'7" tall, 150 pounds. One was wearing a black doo-rag, dark blue shirt, blue jean shorts and dark-colored shoes. The other was wearing a white tank top, blue jean shorts and had dreadlocks.
