Dr. Brenda Kowalske with Helping Hands Missions, a mission organization based out of Gainesville, took a group to Haiti several weeks ago and said the situation hasn't shown much improvement.
"People have a lot of stomach issues, things related to not having good access to clean water, they're sleeping out in the open" she said.
Kowalske said sanitation is one of the greatest issues currently facing the Haitian people.
"It gets dirtier and dirtier because there's no place to put the garbage," Kowalske said. "Unfortunately there's not a lot of infrastructure or government structure to take care of those needs for the people."
She said giving financial donations is probably the best way for people in the states to help.
