UNDATED - Parades and fireworks will highlight the three-day July 4 weekend in northeast Georgia starting Friday.

Cumming gets things started Friday at 6:00 at the fairgrounds. The evening will be highlighted by fireworks at 9:00. The celebration continues Saturday until 1:00 with the annual parade at 10:00.

Festivities in Demorest are also planned on Saturday and include the annual parade with legendary former Georgia football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley as grand marshal this year.

Also on Saturday: Dawson County's Sparks in the Park celebration will be held at Rock Creek Park; Sugar Hill's Sparks in the Park will be held at E.E. Robinson Park; and the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra's annual Patriotic Pops Concert is planned at 7:30 at the Brenau University Amphitheater.

Sunday, Lakewood Baptist Church plans a patriotic celebration at its 9:30 and 11:00 services with Maj. Kevin Jarrard, the Commandant of Cadets at Riverside Military Academy, as guest speaker.

Sunday afternoon at 4:00, race car driver Johnny O'Connell of Flowery Branch, three-time American Le Mans Series champion, will serve as grand marshal of the July 4 parade in Braselton, a part of the town's Independence Day festival.

Fireworks during the holiday weekend include the annual American Legion display at dusk Laurel Park with gates opening at noon. The events at the park are free but there is a $5 parking fee. Bible Baptist Church is also offering a fireworks display Sunday night along with a number of other activities.

Monday, Memorial Park Funeral Home will hold its 17th Annual Public Safety Officer Appreciation Day featuring barbecue and music from 11:00-2:00 on Memorial Park Road. It's free and open to the public, in addition to public safety personnel.

And, with the holiday on Sunday, most places that plan to close for the observance will shut down on Monday, including the federal government. But, the state of Georgia opted for Friday.
