Boyd burst on the political scene in April when he announced he would run for governor as a Republican with the help of $2 million of his own cash.
But after refusing to sign a GOP loyalty oath, state party leaders refused to put him on their primary ballot and he launched an independent bid.
Boyd has issued an e-mail announcement saying his quest has proven too much of a challenge. He had begun collecting nearly 50,000 signatures needed to get on the November ballot.
