No recession-related long faces as GHCC wraps up year

GAINESVILLE - More than 500 new were created in Hall County last year and the first half of this year, despite the recession.

David Lee, a vice-chairman of the Greater Hall Chamber's HALLMark initiative made the announcement as the chamber celebrated the end of its business year Thursday.

Daniel told the chamber board of directors more than 600 jobs were created along with more than $150 million in new business and industry investment in the county.

Paul Chambers, another HALLMark vice-chairman, said the HALLMark initiative is wrapping up a four-year fund-raising campaign and has collected about 95 percent of the $2.4 million that has been pledged. The campaign ends next week. HALLMark funds are used by the chamber for economic development projects.

Also at the meeting, Emily Bagwell passed the chairman's gavel to Darrell Snyder who said the theme of his tenure will be Vision, Value and Teamwork.

AWARDS

Annual awards were also handed out.

The Ambassador of the Year Award was presented to Megan Martin of American Security Shredding.

The Romberg Family was named Family Business of the Year. Their venture, known today as Citisco Food Service Dquipment, was founded in 1929 as City Ice Company.

The Small Business of the Year award went to Scott's on the Square Restaurant.

Community Service awards were presened to the Gainesville and Hall County school systems.

The W.G. Mealor Award for outstanding community service went to Dixie Truelove of Truelove Dairy, who was cited as someone who "works tirelessly" for the chamber.

The chamber also handed out 12 Silver Shovel awards to groups and individuals for their service to the chamber. They went to: Ben Bahnsen, William Claxton, Drew Echols, Deanna Eden, Dede Gossage, Julie Nicholson, and John Preece. Also, Sam Rundell, Quinn Seay, R.K. Whitehead, the City of Oakwood and the City of Flowery Branch.
