GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Board of Commissioners Tuesday discussed holding a non-binding referendum on merging the city and county fire departments.

Commissioner Bobby Banks suggested the referendum.

County Administrator Phil Sutton noted this has been considered four times in the past 30 years by the voters, with the largest vote being 65% in favor of the merger.

The commission is considering putting twice-a-year tax bills on the ballot as a nonbinding referendum again. The question easily passed a couple of years ago but the plan was never implemented.

County spokeswoman Nikki Young says this time the ballot would include the due dates of Oct. 1 and Dec. 1, late penalties and other details "to make sure the voters are clear on all the issues involved in this decision."

OTHER BUSINESS

The commission will vote Thursday at its regular meeting on an agreement with the Hall County Development Authority to issue bonds to finance the North Hall Park ($11.5 million), Glades Reservoir engineering and permitting ($10.5 million) and the Administration building project ($6million for the property and $3 million for the renovations).

The board at that time will also consider adding the Correctional Institute building to the list. The bonds will be reimbursed with SPLOST VI, as these are all projects approved by voters for the 1-cent sales tax.

The commission is also expected to approve a bid Thursday to resurface all the tennis courts at Alberta Banks, Hog Mountain and Sardis parks, as well as a bid to install the playground at Mulberry Creek Community Center in the next two months.
