Soldier's body escorted through town

GAINESVILLE - The body of a veteran of the war in Iraq was escorted through Gainesville Wednesday morning to First Baptist Church on Green Street for the funeral.

Staff Sgt. John DeLong was killed in a traffic accident near Colorado Springs, Col., Sunday. He was stationed at Ft. Carson in Colorado.

Sgt. DeLong served in Iraq between August 2006 and November 2007.

The hearse carrying his body and a car bearing members of his family was escorted from Little-Davenport Funeral Home to the church by several motorcycle law enforcement officers and five motorcycle-riding members of the Patriot Guard.
