LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County police have seized almost half-a-million dollars worth of pot during a traffic stop near Buford.

A member of the Gwinnett County Police Department Highway Interdiction Team (H.I.T.) made initial contact with the suspect vehicle, a mini-van, when he saw it following too close to the vehicle in front of it.

Cpl. Edwin Ritter, spokesman for the police department, said the officer stopped the van and "during the stop, the experienced and highly trained officer noted indicators of criminal activity consistent with drug trafficking" and got permission from the driver to search the vehicle.

During the search, the officer discovered two large black trash bags in the cargo area of the van that contained seven bales of marijuana along with two-gallon size zip-lock bags that also contained marijuana. The total weight of the marijuana was approximately 91.2 pounds with a street value of approximately $408,576.

The driver of the van, Jose Aboytes, was arrested and charged with Trafficking Marijuana, Following Too Close and No Drivers License.
