The race attracting the most attention is for the 9th District Congressional seat which was vacated earlier this year by Nathan Deal.
Eight candidates six Republicans, a Democrat and an independent are on the ballot in the heavily Republican district, in which 75 percent of voters there cast a ballot for Republican John McCain in the 2008 presidential race.
The Republican candidates are former state Sens. Lee Hawkins and Bill Stephens; former state Rep. Tom Graves, cardiologist Chris Cates; retired neurosurgeon Bert Loftman; and textile executive Steve Tarvin. Independent Eugene Moon and Democrat Mike Freeman are also running.
Deal stepped down from in March to pursue the Republican nomination for governor. He'd held the seat since 1992.
In Hall County and part of Jackson, voters will be trying to pick a new state Senator. Three candidates are in the race - Libertarian Brandon Givens and Republicans Butch Miller and Jimmy Norman - hoping to succeed Hawkins, who resigned a few weeks ago to run in the congressional race.
Elsewhere around the state, there are special elections for state House vacancies.
