GAINESVILLE - Brian Kelly became Gainesville police chief Monday morning, trading in his lieutenant bars for the stars of a police chief during a ceremony at the Georgia Mountains Center.

The 10:00 swearing in ceremony was attended by many of his fellow officers, court officials, city officials, family, friends and others. Chief Kelly pledged the full effort of his department to protect the public, reminding his audience that public safety is not a "spectator sport" as he asked for "teamwork" from the people of Gainesville.
