TYBEE ISLAND - Tybee Island is getting some extra tourist business as a result of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and the resulting uncertainty about conditions this summer at beaches there.

Amy Gaster, chairwoman of the Tybee Island Tourism Council and co-owner of Tybee Vacation Rentals, says her business has been getting several bookings a day from guests who originally booked on the Gulf Coast.

The Gulf Coast is a popular summer getaway for extended families from areas within driving distance, such as metro Atlanta, northern Alabama and Tennessee.

Tourism officials in Atlantic beach towns from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to Miami have reported increased interest in the past week.
