City school system out of 'the red'

GAINESVILLE - Two years ago when Merrianne Dyer took over as Gainesville Schools Superintendent with the district about six million dollars "in the red," she may have thought the school system's finances couldn't get any worse.
But that was before the economy took a nose dive.

That, of course, led to decreased revenues and massive funding cuts from the state - which only made a bad situation worse, much worse.

However, the school system survived and is now out of the red... one month ahead of schedule. There were hints a month ago that the turnaround was almost at hand and might have already occurred.

Dr. Dyer said Tuesday that figures presented the school board Monday night show a fund balance of $3.3 million, declaring herself "excited and relieved" at the news.

She admitted that things were pretty bleak in the early days of her administration with the big deficit hanging over her head and the economy getting worse and worse. But she says the financial picture received a shot in the arm when it was discovered that so property taxes had been improperly posted, which immediately reduced deficit that was on the books by about $2 million.

Dr. Dyer credits her co-workers, from the top down, for much of the success in turning things around.

"We're particularly proud of all of our employees and just everyone," she said. "It was a team effort that we were able to do this."
