State Schools Supt. Kathy Cox announced recently that the Georgia Department of Education has reached an agreement with Apple to provie an iTunes University for schools and students in the state to access applications free of charge.
Gainesville's was one of two school districts in Georgia represented at an Education Summit sponsored by Apple last week.
At Monday night's school board meeting, Eddie Nemec, a Gainesville Middle School teacher, and Jamey Moore, Director of Standards-Assessments for the city school system, presented a demonstration of the iPad.
CALENDAR, FAIR ST. WORK, FINANCES
The previously adopted school calendar for the 2010-11 school year was suspended and is expected to be re-drawn to meet the demands of the revenue decrease from state Quality Basic Education funding. The board was presented a budget development report and agreed to wait one week before setting a final calendar.
An update on plans for the construction of a new Fair Street school was given. "We are slightly ahead of schedule and plan to select an architect in July," Supt. Merrianne Dyer said.
Chief Financial Officer Janet Allison announced that the school system anticipates a fund balance in June of $3.3 million.
