KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Longtime Georgia coach Vince Dooley reminded coaches at Tennessee's annual coaching clinic that as football gets more sophisticated, it's still important to focus on the basics of the game.

Dooley appeared at the coaching clinic Friday at the invitation of his son, first-year Volunteers coach Derek Dooley, who also spoke at the three-day workshop.

Vince Dooley said Tennessee legendary coach Robert Neyland's game maxims, which many Vols teams have recited before games through the years, serve as a good reminder of football basics. Neyland's maxims stress the importance of limiting mistakes and playing with full effort for 60 minutes.

When Tennessee plays Georgia on Oct. 9, Vince Dooley says he won't even be at the game. He'll instead watch it from the comfort of his own home while quietly cheering for his son.

The College Football Hall of Fame coach led the Bulldogs to the 1980 national championship and was twice named national coach of the year. He coached Georgia from 1964 to 1988 and was athletic director there from 1979 through 2004.
