WINDER - The Barrow County Sheriff's Office is investigating an explosive device that was found in front of a county commissioner's home.

Sheriff Jud Smith said Monday that an old grenade was found in a ditch at the end of Commissioner Eva Elder's driveway.

Officials say one of the commissioner's relatives found the grenade when he was cutting her lawn on Friday and called 911. Sheriff's deputies called the University of Georgia bomb squad to remove the grenade and destroy it.

Sheriff's officers say the device was a World War II-era practice grenade that had been repacked with explosives.

The sheriff says there's nothing to indicate the grenade was placed there to threaten or harm the commissioner.
