This year Gainesville State College is operating on the same budget as it did two years ago while serving over 1,300 more students, according to school officials who added that the situation will be worse next year.
GSC has furloughed faculty and staff, drastically cut professional development opportunities for faculty, and tightened its belt by not filling needed faculty and staff positions.
Because the cost of health insurance has continued to increase without salary increases, faculty and staff have effectively taken cuts in pay. Students are paying additional fees and endure crowded classroom conditions.
A letter was sent Friday to all GSC students, faculty and staff members as formal notification of the pool's closure.
A letter was also sent to all individuals who have access to the pool through their Gainesville State College Foundation Laker Society membership. They were informed that they will continue to have access to all the other privileges through the course of their annual membership.
