GAINESVILLE - The streets on the downtown square in Gainesville are now open following a fire in the Main Street Market building Friday morning.

Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said the restaurants and shops inside the building are all back open except for Blonde restaurant, where the fire started.

"The cause of the fire is to be determined to be an electrical short in nature," Canada said. "I do not have a damage cost."

Canada did say, however, that the quick action of firefighters saved upwards of a million dollars worth of property loss to the businesses in Main Street Market.

Blonde is located in the basement of the block-long building which houses a cluster of shops, nightclubs and restaurants. Canada said the fire extended into the flooring between the two levels before firefighters could put it out.

He said there is smoke damage throughout the building.

The fire was reported around 7:30 a.m. Friday.
