Area leaders honor Boy Scouts with tree dedication

GAINESVILLE - "Do a Good Turn Daily" is the official slogan of the Boys Scouts of America. And that is just what the BSA has done at Ivey Terrace Park, a part of Rock Creek Greenway in Gainesville.

"Turning" shovel after shovel of earth was done about a week ago as local Boy Scouts and city workers labored together to plant the "Centennial Tree", an October Glory maple.

That Centennial Tree was formally dedicated on Monday afternoon as Scouts, Scout leaders, community leaders, and friends looked on.

The reason for the planting and today's ceremony was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the 75th anniversary of the 26-county Northeast Georgia Council of the B.S.A.

The Gainesville tree is one of eight that the Scouts will plant in the region. Each of those trees will have a granite marker near them to remind future generations of the work of the Boy Scouts.

Speaking to those in attendance Joe Chipman, past president of the Northeast Georgia Council, noted that Hall County Scouting efforts to reach across social and economic barriers. â
