"After reviewing the data for the last two years, we're proud to announce that we're saving nearly two million gallons of water per day," said Acting Director of Water Resources Lynn Smarr.
The project included two backwash equalization tanks, a filtrate equalization tank and recycle pump station. These tanks clarify and recycle the water used to clean filters at both the Lanier Filter Plant and the Shoal Creek Filter Plant for reuse as raw water supply. "By recycling this filter backwash water, we reduce the water we withdraw from Lake Lanier to serve Gwinnett County residents," said Ron Peters, Water Resources Deputy Director for Engineering and Construction.
Previously, some of the treated backwash water was discharged to Richland Creek under state discharge permits. Hazen and Sawyer, P.C. of Atlanta, performed the study, design and construction services for the project.
"We must make every reasonable, cost-effective effort to conserve and use water wisely," said Board Chairman Charles Bannister. "This project is a good example of our folks working hard to avoid wasting any water we take from Lake Lanier."
