According to Fox 5 News, the school staff, while opening the morning mail, discovered an envelope containing a suspicious white powdery substance. Associate Superintendent for Gilmer County Schools Mike Schlabra said the staff took immediate action.
"They went through their normal procedure, contacted authorities, and then at that time, since the kids were coming in late, we went ahead and closed school," said Schlabra. The school system originally had planned to open late because of winter weather conditions.
HAZMAT crews were called to the school to investigate and, at last report, were still on the scene.
Schlabra noted that a similar incident happened Tuesday at government offices in Ellijay.
