CARROLLTON - A west Georgia maker of women's apparel has shut down after 38 years in business, laying off 70 employees.

Fashion Star Inc. filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and liquidated its assets amid lagging business. The company made high-end uniforms and business suits for women and its primary customers were small, independent banks.

Fashion Star Chairman Robert Loftin said he trimmed the work force in early 2009 to cut costs. He said "I did everything I could do but it just wasn't enough."

The company employed about 150 people and had sales of $8 million in 2000. But business has lagged since then and by 2009 the company's sales sank to $2.2 million.
