Smart will make $750,000 a year through Feb. 28, 2013, under a deal unanimously approved Tuesday by the compensation committee of the university's board of trustees. He made $360,000 in salary last year plus $72,000 in bonuses.
Smart won the Frank Broyles Award as the nation's top assistant coach. He then turned down a lucrative offer from Georgia coach Mark Richt to run the defense at his alma mater, where he was an All-Southeastern Conference defensive back.
Smart's contract won't have a buyout if he leaves for a head coaching job, but does require him to pay $72,000 if he takes an assistant coaching possession elsewhere. He receives a $34,400 bonus if he's still employed at Alabama on March 1.
The Crimson Tide ranked second nationally in six defensive categories, including scoring, run and total defense.
The trustees also approved three other coaches' contracts:
-- A 2-year deal with newly promoted defensive assistant Jeremy Pruitt, with a $190,000 salary in 2010 and $200,000 in 2011.
-- A 3-year contract for new baseball coach Mitch Gaspard with $225,000 annually plus incentives.
-- A 3-year extension for women's basketball coach Wendell Hudson at $295,000 a year through June 30, 2016. He didn't receive a raise but gets an $18,000 signing bonus and a $12,000 expense allowance.
