GAINESVILLE - You've probably guessed that January was colder-than-normal in north Georgia. But do you know how much?

Based on the accessnorthga.com records, it turns out that it was about five degrees below normal.

For instance, in Gainesville, the average daily temperature for a typical January is 41 degrees.... 51 for the highs, 31 for the lows. But this year, the average was 36.5, 45 for the highs and 28 for the lows.

On 19 of 31 days, the low was below freezing and on 19 days the high was lower than 50. The lowest temperature was 12, which was recorded on the 9th. The highest was 66 on the 20th. For January 2008, the average daily temperature was 40. Rainfall for January 2009 was about average but for last January, it was 3.14 below normal.

In addition, last month there were two snow/ice events... one on the 7th and another on 29th and 30th. And, the National Weather Service says we may have more snow by this weekend. There's a 40 percent chance of rain and snow Friday night.
