GAINESVILLE - A kindergarten student, who was hit by a Hall County school bus on Bird Road Wednesday morning, is apparently going to be okay.

6-year-old Kenny Ritson was struck by the bus as it was leaving at stop, according to Jewel Armour, Executive Director of Transportation for the Hall County School System.

Armour said the driver of the bus, Marcie Scroggs, had made one of her standard stops near the end of Bird Road to pick up children for Lanier Elementary School. After she had boarded the students and as she was leaving the stop to continue her route, the bus struck Kenny Ritson.

Ritson was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was treated for ankle and leg injuries.

School system spokesman Gordon Higgins said Ritson was not seriously injured and was not expected to be admitted. Higgins said the x-rays were negative but it appears he suffered some "deep bruising."

Supt. Will Schofield, Lanier Elementary Principal John Wiggins and Kenny's kindergarten teacher Kristi Ciccarello were also at the Medical Center to check on Kenny's condition and offer support to the parents, Amanda and Douglas Ritson.

Wiggins said that the parents of the 15 students who were on bus 9626 at the time of the accident were notified and that Kenny's kindergarten class was told he had been in an accident, but was okay. The school counselor will also be talking to the class and answering any questions and concerns they may have.

Spokesman Gordon Higgins said another bus was brought to the accident site and the students on the bus involved in the accident were put on the second bus and continued their trip to school.
