GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's street maintenance crews are behind on leaf pick up this month due to equipment failure and colder than usual weather.

Public Works Director David Dockery said Monday crews were only able to pick up about 70% of their route last week.

"We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused everyone during the holiday season," Dockery said. "We have two pieces of equipment being repaired. We are waiting on parts and working with a local company to have the equipment repaired as soon as possible. We are anxious to be operating at 100% as soon as possible."

Dockery added that the leaves are harder to gather when they are frozen or wet and have to be scraped up by hand. And, he issued a reminder to make sure there is nothing leaf piles leaf pile except leaves. Rocks, limbs, and yard clippings can damage the city's equipment," he added.
