WINDER - More than 40 soldiers from a Winder-based national guard unit are deploying to Iraq.

The 42 members of the 1st Battalion 185th Aviation. Detachment1, Company C, Air Assault and their Blackhawk helicopters are headed, first, to their mobilization station at Fort Hood, Texas.

Georgia National Guard spokesman Ken Baldowski said while in Iraq, the unit will provide "command, control and communication enhancement, staff transport
and liaison, target acquisition and reconnaissance, and limited Air Movement
flights in support of Operation New Dawn."

Col. Baldowski said 25 members of the unit have previously been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan or Kosovo.
