CLEVELAND - White County leaders gathered recently to look down the road and plan for the county's future, and came up with a number of "theme areas" that need to be addressed.

The White County Chamber of Commerce and White County Planning Department hosted the event to share ideas, develop a plan, and assist local governments and agencies as they develop decisions for the future of the county.

Dennis Epps, Associate Director of Government Services and Research with the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute facilitated the meeting.

The group of 60 came up with eight different "theme areas" they feel need to address in developing future plans. Among them: employment and entrepreneurship, tourism, education, infrastructure, agriculture and agri-tourism.

The future of the county has so many aspects, Epps said, that there was no way to tackle all the issues facing the county at one meeting. More meetings are planned by the group to look at a Vision for 2020 for the county.

A similar meeting held in 1988 developed a vision for White County for the year 2000. The many of the goals established at that time by the Vision 2000 initiative were followed up on and accomplished.
