NE Ga. schools consider extension of SPLOST

UNDATED - A number of northeast Georgia school administrators are pushing an extension of a 1 percent sales tax to pay for school repairs and construction projects.

Clarke, Jackson and Oconee county school districts and the city school systems of Jefferson and Commerce - among others - are discussing a new cycle for the local-option sales taxes first approved several years ago. The cycles last five years.

The Jackson County School District, which shares SPLOST revenue with Jefferson and Commerce school systems, is preparing for a March 15 referendum. Clarke and Oconee county school officials are planning to put the issue on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The three counties estimate the tax collections from a fourth SPLOST could total more than $200 million.
