The Stingrays took the lead early in the first period on a powerplay goal from Tommy Goebel after Gladiators defenseman Sam Roberts paid a visit to the penalty box for tripping.
After several stops from Gladiators goalie Billy Sauer, Josh Godfrey managed to sneak one past Sauer making it 2-0 at the end of the first period. This was the first time the Gladiators have been down by more than a goal all season.
Forward Ryan Garbutt put the Gladiators on the board early in the second period 1:59 in, diminishing the Stingray lead to just a single point. It was Garbutt's sixth goal of the season tying him with Derek Nesbitt for the team lead.
The Gladiators and Stingrays continued a back and forth battle for the remainder of the second period, leaving the score at 2-1 heading into the third.
Just 35 seconds into the third period the Stingrays struck again, as Rob Ricci put the Rays back up by two. South Carolina added to their lead when Jake Hauswirth tacked on another late goal. The Stingrays fifth goal was deflected out in front by Tommy Goebel, his second tally of the night.
Gladiators defenseman Matt Case fired a slap shot into the net from the blue line at the 17:30 mark in the third period to cap the scoring 5-2.
The Gladiators travel to Greenville, S.C., to face the Road Warriors in their next game on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
