WINDER - The Barrow County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) Traffic Enforcement Unit placed 1st in their category in the State of Georgia recently.

The unit completes a Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety Challenge Application yearly which involves a year long process of compiling data and statistics of the Sheriff's Office activities. This application also involves comparing the statistics and data to previous years to see increases or declines in activity.

All law enforcement agencies throughout the State are eligible to complete an application and enter it in the competition. The categories are ranked based on agency size and then 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners are determined by judges. Along with placing 1st in their category, the Sheriff's Office won the speed awareness award, which is part of the special award category.

"I am proud of the work the traffic enforcement unit puts into this application process," said Jud Smith, Barrow County Sheriff. "The Sheriff's Office works diligently to reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities within our County," added Sheriff Smith.

This marks the third year in a row the Sheriff's Office has placed in this competition. The Sheriff's Office will be traveling to Orlando, Florida in late October to be recognized and accept their award for placing in the National Challenge competition.
