Cole and Cam Segraves made sure there wouldn't be one Friday night against Stephens County. The brothers connected on a 69-yard pass play with just over two minutes left in the game and then Cole Segraves scrambled in from 10-yards out two plays later to lift White County to a thrilling come-from-behind 21-14 win at home.
Cam Segraves would preserve the win picking off a Stephens County pass near the goal line with 35 seconds left in the game.
The win for the Warriors (6-1, 3-0 in subregion) gives them a one-game lead over Stephens County (5-2, 2-1) and Lumpkin County (5-2, 2-1) and holding victories over both for tiebreaker purposes.
White County never led until the final minute. The Indians took the initial lead in the second quarter but White County answered with a late score before half to tie the game at 7-7.
Stephens County retook the lead on a 45-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter and then looked to have the Warriors reeling forcing a key fourth down at the Indians' 11 with less than seven minutes remaining.
But the White County coaches called a gutsy reverse pass on fourth down and Ethan McAllister hit Patrick Jones for an 11-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14-all. Three minutes later Stephens County looked to be in position to take yet another lead driving the ball to midfield but the White County defense sacked the Indians' quarterback forcing a punt that pinned the Warriors inside their own 10 with three minutes left.
It was just enough time for White County and the Segraves brothers to take control of their playoff destiny.
White County plays host to Chestatee next Friday in Cleveland. Stephens County will look to rebound against Lumpkin County in a showdown for a possible playoff spot -- the two teams are tied at 2-1 in subregion A -- in Dahlonega.
