Apalachee tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter on a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Alex Camp, but the Gladiators (7-0, 7-0 Region 8-AAAA) answered with a quick touchdown to retake the lead and then surprised the Wildcats (5-2, 5-2) with an onside kick. Clarke Central capitalized with another quick score and then scored again late in the half to push its lead to 28-7 by halftime.
The Gladiators added another touchdown to open the second half and then held off Apalachee in the fourth quarter.
Stanley Williams scored a touchdown for the Wildcats, who are deadlocked with Loganville for third place and just one-half game ahead of Heritage for fifth place.
Apalachee returns to Athens next Friday, taking on Cedar Shoals.
