All series in all classifications are scheduled to begin Wednesday with the first two games of best-of-three series. Game 3s, if necessary, will be Thursday.
No one is considered a heavier favorite than three-time defending Class AA state champ Buford. The Lady Wolves (24-4) are the top seed from Region 6-AA and have won 12 straight games heading into the state tournament. They have allowed just eight total runs in that span and will play host to Region 8-AA No. 4 seed Dawson County. They have not lost to a Class AA team all season.
Staying in Class AA, No. 2 Union County (24-1-1) is the top seed from 8-AA and will take on Region 6-AA No. 4 seed Lovett. The Lady Panthers have won 21 straight coming into the tournament.
In Class AAA, White County was the only team in the old Region 7-AAA alignment that included Hall and surrounding counties to advance to the state tournament. The Lady Warriors (22-6) shocked No. 2 Walnut Grove in the 8-AAA tournament and three and their six losses have come to Union County, Walnut Grove, and No. 1 Oconee County.
"We felt all along we could win the region so I'm not surprised (we beat Walnut Grove)," White County coach John Brown said after the victory. "But we're just glad that we can host a first round game. It's always tough in the state tournament so having those first games at home really help."
White County will open the tournament at home against 6-AAA No. 3 seed Carrollton.
In Class AAAA, Habersham Central advanced through the rugged 8-AAAA as the No. 3 seed and will have to travel to Chamblee Wednesday in the first round. The Lady Raiders (18-8) tied for the region lead at the end of the regular season but ran into a hot Heritage, Conyers team in the region tournament dropping the final two games in their best-of-three series.
Habersham Central did beat No. 1-ranked Madison County earlier in the season so the Lady Raiders are a legitimate threat to go far in playoffs.
