Object of Monday manhunt arrested

GAINESVILLE - The object of a nearly-day long manhunt in Hall and Jackson counties Monday has been arrested.

Russell Allan Owen who was wanted in connection with over 20 burglaries in the Northeast Georgia area and also other States.

The manhunt took place in South Hall in the area of JJ Lott Road and Benefield Road near the Jackson County line. Col. Jeff Strickland of the Hall County Sheriff's Office said that about 10:00 Monday morning investigators and patrol officers from the Hall County and Jackson county sheriff's officers spotted Owen traveling into Hall County on Davenport Road in a U-Haul truck.

"Once spotted, Owen fled in the U-Haul truck for a short distance before abandoning the truck and fleeing on foot at a residence on JJ Lott Road," Strickland said. "Hall County Sheriff's Office K-9 units and a helicopter from the Georgia State Patrol began a...search for the burglary suspect. At approximately 12:30, Owen attempted to break into a residence on Benefield Road. A neighbor spotted Owen who again fled into the woods. The search was redirected to Benefield Road."

Col. Strickland added that before being apprehended, Owen was able to steal a vehicle from a nearby business on Winder Highway and drove out of the area undetected.

Investigators continued their search efforts and were able to establish a location in Gwinnett County where Owen was believed headed. Hall and Gwinnett officers then began watching the place.

"At approximately 6:00, Russell Allan Owen was observed in the area near the location under surveillance and Gwinnett County Police attempted to execute a traffic stop," Strickland said. "Owen was still occupying the stolen vehicle at the time. Owen again fled on foot but was captured and taken into custody by Gwinnett Police without further incident."

Owen was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center where he is currently being held without bond.

Owen is wanted in connection with burglaries in the following counties;
- Hall County - Gwinnett County
- White County - Lumpkin County
- Union County - Dawson County

Owen is also wanted in connection with burglaries in two Kentucky counties.

So far, investigators have recovered approximately $100,000.00 worth of stolen property in connection with Owen, according to Strickland.

Agencies assisting in the capture of Owen include Hall County Sheriff's Office, Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Gwinnett Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and Georgia State Patrol Aviation. This incident remains under investigation by all the respective agencies above.
