Motorists finally getting the 'message'

GAINESVILLE - Despite 20 different signs alerting motorists that the Dawsonville Highway bridge at the Hall-Forsyth county line is closed each weekend... many are still not getting the message but things are improving.

The state Department of Transportation began work on the bridge on weekends about a month ago. Each weekend, the bridge is closed from 8:00 Friday night until 5:00 Monday morning. This weekend is the exception with the bridge shut down from 8:00 Saturday morning until 5:00 a.m. Monday.

DOT's Teri Pope says "you know we do everything we can to let folks know" including the "loading" ten electronic signs with the information and using an additional "hard' signs on the road saying "the bridge is closed." Those signs went up well in advance of the start of the work and there have been constant reminders through the media of the bridge closing.

Pope adds while "the learning curve, thankfully, is kicking in on this project" there are still a lot of motorists who drive all the way to the bridge and then have to turn around and backtrack to take the detour, adding lots of miles and minutes to their trip.

Just last week, DOT announced that the work is slightly ahead of schedule. The project is expected to be completed by the end of November.
