GAINESVILLE - A young Gainesville man has been sentenced seven years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh said Thusday 25-year-old Oscar Reyes must also serve 13 years on probation and will be banished from Hall and Dawson counties once he is released.

Reyes pleaded guilty in connection with the November 2008 death of 24-year-old Deotris Mize. Reyes had punched Mize a month earlier, causing him to fall backward and hit his head.

"I would add that the sentence imposed was appropriate for the case, taking into account the risks inherent in a trial, and the willingness of the defendant to finally take responsibility," Darragh said. "In the end, the very fine family of the deceased, while they would like to have seen a higher sentence, were both understanding and accepting of the reasons for the recommendation. The deceased was a fine young man, from a loving family, and his death, though unintended, was surely senseless, and the defendant will have a long time to think about it in prison."
