GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada said Monday afternoon there still had not been a determination made on the cause of a fire that gutted a 12,000-square-foot warehouse overnight Sunday and no damage estimate has been put on the loss.

Canada says the ruins have not been safe enough for investigators to enter and firefighters were still putting out hot spots Monday.

The building was totally engulfed in flames when first units arrived about 11:00 Sunday night.

Chief Canada says it took almost three hours to bring the fire - on Airport Street near West Ridge Road - under control; 16-degree temperatures made it hard on firefighters and equipment, he said.

"It was very hard during that time for the fire fighters," Chief Canada said. "Everything freezes up, we had a lot of ice on the street around the trucks and on the fire fighters themselves, it takes a toll on them."

Canada said there were no injuries; the temperatures might have caused the hydraulic lines to burst on the city's ladder truck and it underwent repairs at the fire scene.

"We had three engines, the ladder company and two rescue companies at the initial response," the Chief said. "As we were able to contain the fire we broke those down as quick as we could to get our fire fighters back in service and get them in a warm place."

He said Mar-Jac Poultry used the warehouse and it contained lots of materials that helped fuel the fire... such as paper and plastics as well as some machinery were using the building for storage.
