Softball: Dawson County knocks off Jefferson

JEFFERSON - Cheyenne Bennett tossed a complete-game, five-hitter to lead Dawson County to a 5-1 win over Jefferson in Region 8-AA softball action.

Bennett walked just one and struck out five and also had two hits and one RBI at the plate to lead the Lady Tigers. Kimberley Wallace also had two hits for Dawson County. Sydney Cox, Jenna Abbott, and Gracie Hovan each had one hit for Dawson County. Cox and Abbott each knocked in a run.

Dawson County scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead and then blew the game open with three runs in the fifth. The Lady Tigers took advantage of six Jefferson errors. Jefferson scored its only run in the sixth.

Morgan McKinney took the loss for Jefferson allowing six hits in 4 2/3 innings. McKinney struck out seven. Brittney Smith, Jordyn Whitfield, Paige Pate, Kara Perry, and Catherine Knight all had one hit for Jefferson (5-8, 0-4 in region).

Jefferson next will travel to Union County Wednesday in a make-up game from last Tuesday. The Lady Dragons then will play host to Oglethorpe County Thursday.
