WINDER - A Barrow County middle school administrator has been named the nation's ``middle level principal of the year'' by MetLife and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Georgia officials announced Wednesday that Sheila Kahrs, principal of Haymon-Morris Middle School in Winder, was chosen from among the top middle school principals in the country. Kahrs has been at the school since 2005.

Kahrs' award includes a $3,500 grant to spend on her schools. She will be honored Oct. 16 in a banquet in Washington, D.C.

In Kahrs' four years at the helm, Haymon-Morris has been among the top scoring middle schools in the state despite more having more than half the student body come from low-income families. She has created a mentor program for students and asked teachers to sit in on interviews for new hires.
