DAHLONEGA - A 20-year land dispute may have finally come to a tragic end Monday morning with the murder of a Lumpkin County man.

Lumpkin County Sheriff's Investigator Darren Martin said just before 10 a.m., officers responded to a call about a dispute and possible gun fire at a residence off of Mill Creek Road.

"Deputies responded to find 76-year-old Jewell Crane deceased," said Martin.

Martin said Crane's neighbor, Lewis Melvin Dempsey, was arrested at his home and charged with murder and aggravated assault.

"Actually, he (Dempsey) and his wife made the call to 911 to report what had just taken place," he said.

Martin said Dempsey's wife is not believed to have been involved in the murder and is not facing charges. He said the two men had been involved in a dispute over their property lines for approximately two decades.

Martin said Crane's body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.

The GBI and Lumpkin County authorities are still investigating the incident.
