Jackson County off to best start since '81

JEFFERSON - Jackson County used an explosive second and third quarters to break open a close game en route to a 42-7 thumping of Sonoraville Friday night at Panthers Stadium.

The win for Jackson County (2-0) gives the Panthers their first 2-0 start to a season since 1981.

'We're excited about our start," jackson County coach Billy Kirk said. "(Friday's) crowd was probably the biggest one in my three years here."

Charles Smothers led the way for the Panthers with over 100 yards rushing and one touchdown. John Holton scored twice and Zane Cochran and Michael Peseresi also had offensive touchdowns for Jackson County.

Josh Banks returned an interception for a touchdown on defense.

The Panthers are off next week before taking on Prince Avenue Christian in two weeks. the last time Jackson County opened a season 3-0 was in 1981. The Panthers went 2-0-1 to start the 1992 season.
