"There's no real clear instruction on the handling of the situation when no one signs up for the post, so the best that we can determine is that it should be handled like a vacant seat on the city council," said Poole.
Poole said that seat will become vacant Jan. 1. He said that's when city council will appoint someone to fill the spot.
"The handling of the vacant seat can be through action of the city council to appoint a replacement to that vacant seat," he said.
Poole, the longtime mayor, said it's the first time no one has qualified for a seat on the city council since he's been in office.
As it now stands, Poole and councilman Roy Turpin - both of whom did qualify but without opposition - will be the only candidates on the ballot in Gillsville.
OTHER QUALIFYING
Eight candidates in four races. That's the scenario shaping up in Commerce for the fall elections... the largest field of candidates of any town in the Gainesville area, so far. Qualifying ended Wednesday with two people each seeking the mayor's post (Keith Burchett and Sammy Thomason) and one city council seat (Darren Owensby and Donald Wilson), and two candidates in the hunt for a pair of Commerce Board of Education posts (Arthur Lee Pittman and Keelan Cashanna Rucker for Post 1 and Robbie Barnett and Mary Seabolt for Post 2).
In Gainesville, as qualifying closed Wednesday, city school board member Kelvin Simmons picked up opposition from Delores Diaz and Richard Lacey. Only one other race for either the city council or the school board will be contested. It will pit incumbent school board member David Syfan against Kellie Weeks. City councilmen Danny Dunagan and George Wangemann qualified for re-election, unopposed.
Braselton voters will have two candidates to choose from when they elect a new mayor in November: Bill Orr and Ralph Richardson, Junior. Incumbent Pat Graham is giving up the post to run for state Senate next year. Also on the Braselton ballot will be three candidates who hope to replace Richardson on the city council: Jeremy Britt, Bill Greene, and Peggy Slappey.
Qualifying is still underway in some cities and towns.
