GAINESVILLE - Baseball season may be winding down for the big leaguers, but it's just beginning for a group of special athletes at Hall County's Field of Dreams.

The inaugural season starts September 19, and program coordinator Marci Summer with Hall County Parks and Leisure Services said the athletes are ready.

"Our main goal is to challenge the athletes, introduce them to baseball and have fun," said Summer.

She noted that she isn't sure how many athletes will actually take part in this year's first season of play, but she said that volunteers are prepared to work with whatever number shows up.

"We can take [athletes with] visual impairments, developmental disabilities, physical disabilities," said Summer.

The Field of Dreams, located at Alberta Banks Park, is equipped with a special surface to accommodate athletes with special needs. The project was the brainchild of former director Carey Wright and area business leaders, according to Summer.

The season begins Saturday, September 19 and concludes Saturday, October 24. Play takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. each Saturday. Athletes of any age are eligible to play.
